The film The Eight Hundred deals with the Chinese resistance against invading Japanese troops during the early days of the Second Sino–Japanese War. Produced in the People’s Republic of China and released in 2020, it was a huge box office success that showcases the heroic resistance of a Republican National Revolutionary Army battalion during the Battle of Shanghai in 1937. While the Chinese nation faces Japan as its “other”, The Eight Hundred’s patriotic male heroes emerge as the antithesis of, not women and dehumanized Japanese soldiers, but unheroic Chinese men, whom they seek to “wake up” and inspire as role models. This article examines how The Eight Hundred constructs a concept of martial masculinity tied to nationalism in relation to other established Chinese concepts of masculinity.

Nanny of the Maroons was the first and foremost leader of the Windward Maroons of Jamaica, an autonomous community of self-emancipated formerly enslaved people in eastern Jamaica. Her historicity and legendary status belend into one another, but she was most likely born into an Akan community in present-day Ghana around 1680. Dispossessed of her homeland sometime around the turn of the eighteenth century, she survived the Middle Passage across the Atlantic. In the legend that distinguishes Maroons from Jamaicans, Nanny and her sister, Sekesu, arrived in Jamaica. Nanny escaped into the mountains, establishing the lineage of Maroons; Sekesu remained enslaved, establishing the lineage of Jamaican non-Maroons. Alongside this mythical arrival in Jamaica, a growing consensus among contemporary Maroon leaders argues that Nanny arrived in Jamaica with her brother, Kojo, known in some accounts as Cudjoe. Kojo was the leader of the Leeward Maroons in the mountainous Cockpit Country in western Jamaica.
